Why is the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the story? Is the Tree there simply to tempt Adam and Eve or is there a larger purpose? I believe that the Tree, and the fact that God forbade eating of it’s fruit, represents the eternal test of choosing God’s way or our own. The story is about freedom as Adam and Eve have the freedom to eat of the tree; however, they have the responsibility not to. God has forbidden it and so they are tempted.
Even in Eden before the fall there is a choice to choose God and his way or to choose our own. There is a choice to choose God or our own self-will. The fall is about self-will. The path of self-will leads out into the desert east of Eden, far away from hope and community with God.
Some say the fall began before Eve and Adam ate the forbidden fruit. Rather the fall began when Eve lied to the snake about God’s command, saying, “God said we are not allowed to touch that tree.”
