Jesus’ famous teaching we call the Beatitudes are so unexpected. In a first reading one can gain a sort of warm-fuzzy feeling reading them; however, their true meaning is more shocking.
At second glance the teachings might even seem ridiculous.
Blessed are the the poor in spirit for their’s is the kingdom of heaven. Really? Or Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. This doesn’t sound like wisdom. Donald Kraybill, said that Jesus called his followers to the “Upside-Down Kingdom.”
